Hi! I'm Heather Sager

more topics, more confusion

I taught my first live masterclass of the year earlier this week inside The Speaker Society. The focus? Helping business owners choose the right speaking topics—ones that align with their goals, light them up, and position them as the go-to expert in their industry.

It’s a critical step because too many business owners fall into one of two traps:

  1. Thinking they need a long menu of “sexy” topics to attract opportunities.
  2. Feeling stuck because they haven’t claimed their thing.

Here’s the truth: more topics don’t equal more opportunities. They create confusion, both for you and for the people you’re trying to reach. The most successful speakers lean into one thing they want to be known for.

Not going to sugar coat it, this can be a hard truth to embrace because we think it’s going to box us in (but in fact, the opposite is true. More on that later).

So during the class, I walked attendees through my Sweet Spot Topics framework (you can download it here for free), which helps you identify your signature talk and 1-2 supporting topics.

I totally said “hit your sweet spot” far too many times during the session 😅

But the moment that really landed for everyone was this question:

👉 Imagine it’s 10 years from now. You’re speaking at an event full of your peers and industry leaders. What are they saying about the impact you’ve made on their lives?

What did they learn from you? What do they know you for?

This question hit hard because it forced everyone to think beyond today and claim their legacy. That clarity is what allows you to build your signature talk—the one that ties directly to your business goals and positions you as the authority.

Here’s what I want you to take away from this, especially if speaking is a focus in 2025:

  1. You don’t need a long list of topics. You might just need one signature talk or a max or 3 (that pretty much leads back to your signature talk).
  2. Experts are comfortable being known for one thing. Don’t dilute your brand trying to please everyone or convince yourself that being “known” for one thing doesn’t mean that’s the ONLY thing you do.
  3. Stop obsessing over the perfect talk title. Your title doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be good enough to start.

Now, I’d love to hear from you:

Do you have a signature topic? Hit reply and tell me what you speak on (and what types of speaking opportunities you’d like more of in 2025 because I’d love to shout you out).

And if you don’t have a signature topic, what’s holding you back from choosing one?

The last time I asked a question like this, it led to the most amazing conversations so seriously, I’d love to hear from you.

P.S. If you’re struggling to nail down your signature talk topic or core messaging, I’ve opened up three Momentum Sessions on my calendar. In these power sessions (75 mins), we’ll work together to clarify your “thing” or nail down your speaking strategy for your business this year. If you’ve ever wanted to pick my brain, or just get outside feedback on your ideas, this is your chance. Reply MOMENTUM and I’ll send you a link to snag.

P.P.S. Want to build your signature talk live with me? It's been 15 months since I've run my live Signature Talk Accelerator and it's HAPPENING PEOPLE! Save the date -- the week of February 24th. We'll be running it *slightly* different than in 2023 and it's going to be even better. More to come.
